The course and its history
The Champion designed course - which was modelled by James Braid ( the 5 times Open winner and founder and President of the PGA) is overlooked by the superb Georgian hotel. Braid was a highly respected accomplished golfer, winning the British Open no less than five times, in 1901,1905,1906 and 1910. He designed more than 200 British courses stretching from Brora in the Scottish Highlands to Shanklin and Sandown on the Isle of Wight. There is even a James Braid Society for keen followers.
Braid's challenge was to transform a unique blend of exposed coastline and lush tree lined parkland into a course that would challenge every hickory shaped club. Like all good seaside course designers Braid made use of the strong easterly wind which can cause even the best players a headache. The wind hits your drive on 5, 10, and 15 from the right and on the 13 and 17 head on. With a strong wind behind you on 11 and 14 it makes club selection a nightmare.
Braid has given many a golfer a lot to reflect on when reaching the club bar!
It is especially interesting to note that many of the roads in close proximity to the North Shore are named after famous golf courses. For example, Hoylake Drive, Sunningdale Drive, St.Andrews Drive, Muirfield Drive, Brancaster Drive and of course not forgetting North Shore Road.
